Plaid At Your Wedding?

Going Plaid? Planning to have a bagpiper at your wedding or wedding reception? This cake will perfectly accent your theme. So if you are a McGreggor or Ross or McDonald this cake may be perfect for you. However, I'm a Ross (or I was one) and had no desire to have a plaid accent anywhere in my wedding. (Of course this could be because I married an Italian and not a Scot). But if you are into it, by all means accent your cake or wear a garter with your family plaid. One bride had an inset in her train of the family plaid and her dad wore a kilt to give her away. (Not to mention the bagpipes that played). But to each her and/or his own.
Ten Ways To Go Plaid At Your Wedding

1. Groom, groomsmen and male family members wear their plaids. This will result in seeing a lot of legs that might better be hidden under a pair of pants so give thought to the men who will be wearing them before deciding that everyone will wear a kilt.

2. The bride's garter can be in her family plaid. This is a perfect way to accent your heritage at your wedding without it taking over your wedding theme.

3. The bride can wear a cockade in her hair in the family plaid (or the plaid of the family she is marrying into). This is a nice accent won't take over the wedding look.

4. The groomsmen can wear plaid socks with their tuxedos. You'll probably need to order these online but they will make a good photo op.

5. The bride can a gown with plaid piping along the edges or even a gown that is all plaid. All plaid is a bit much for me but ... follow your dream.

6.  The groom and groomsmen can wear a boutenniere with a plaid ribbon and the flowers of the bride and bridesmaid can be accented with plaid ribbons. This is a nice accent that doesn't take over the whole wedding like a plaid dress would.

7.  The bride can wear a crinoline that has a plaid edge to it. This show when she walks or dances but won't be overkill.

8. Add some plaid accents to the cake. (See the photo above). This is an easy accent and is a nice way to give a heads up to your heritages.

9. Plaid napkins or napkin rings on the tables are another nice way to give your heritage a nod without overwhelming your wedding.

10. Choose thistle and rose centerpieces for your tabletops.

There are many more ways to give your wedding a Scottish look. Check a variety of websites dedicated to planning a Scots wedding.

You can also have your wedding in Scotland by renting a castle there and having the ultimate Scots wedding. To see some examples of Scots weddings visit this site. And to be sure everything is above board and legal be sure to visit The General Register Office site.

Unique Wedding Cakes

Photos courtesy of Avivus

Wedding cakes come in all shapes and sizes and this unique birdcage wedding cake is feminine and romantic--perfect for your wedding day! No cake toppers needed, this cake has enough flowers and lace look to it that anything additional would be overkill.

And if you are looking for a single cake for the bride and groom, this birdcage cake will be perfect on the sweetheart table. My only problem, fondant! I love the look of fondant, but I don't know anyone who likes to eat it. But I do love these cakes and thought they'd be an interesting addition for a bride who is looking for a cake that is a little different.

Wearing off white with tiny buttons up the back? The cake above is the perfect choice to compliment your wedding day look. This cake is tall and will feed a lot of guests or you can have fake tiers made and have a sheet cake cut to serve your guests. No matter which cake you choose, both are elegant desserts that will act as both your cake and a decoration at your wedding reception. Congrats to the designers of these cakes.

Wedding Cakes Go Gold or Silver

Photo courtesy of My Big Fat Wedding Kitsch

Wedding cakes are no longer white with pastel flowers. Today's cakes often have metallic accents or jewel like accents. Here are just a few examples of metallic/jewel-like wedding cakes.

Whether it's silver or gold metallic, or even copper, wedding cakes with metallic accents are sure to catch the eye of your guests. Sometimes gilt is difficult to work with so this is definitely a professional job, not a diy cake, even though the barrel shape makes it look deceptively easy.

This gold on gold relief cake topped with a flower is elegant and sure to catch the eye of all of your guests, not to mention make a great photo op. Unfortunately there isn't a link other than to Pinterest, if anyone knows where the original came from please let me know so I can credit them (and so brides can order cakes from them!)

Enjoy Cupcakes At Your Wedding Reception

Why not make cupcakes the focus of your wedding reception? It is a great way to feed your guests, less mess and inexpensive.

Serve a variety of cupcakes with some quality lemonades and iced tea. You can even spike the lemonade if you want to!

Great for an early summer outdoor wedding in your local park or your own backyard. Friends and family can bring cupcakes as gifts, you provide the drinks, decor, and music. Sounds like a fun party to me!

Check Enjoy Cupcakes' Gallery for more great photos of delicious cupcakes and display ideas.

Butterfly Cake Box Cakes

Photo from Pinterest via Victoria Barnes (source: Butterfly Cakebox)

I found this photo on a friend's Pinterest and fell in love with the unique decorations on this three tier wedding cake. I love the color of the ribbon that takes away from the stark whiteness of the icing but the flowers on the cake are gorgeous! I've never seen anything like them.

If you are a bride looking for some unique ideas for a wedding cake, visit Butterfly Cakebox's web site and scroll through their photos. You are sure to find one to love.

You can also find out about the owner's passion for baking, which is just one of the reasons her cakes both look and taste so good.

Cupcakes: The New Wedding Cake?

Sometimes you see food that is a work of art. These cupcakes fit that description perfectly! Unfortunately the photo was on Pinterest and the link there doesn't work on my computer, try it on yours, maybe you'll be luckier! I love these! Would order them for my daughter's wedding if she hadn't already placed her order. These are so delicate and perfect for a wedding.

And then we have these gorgeous daffodil cupcakes. Perfect for a spring wedding. Nothing says spring like daffodils and I've never seen them on cupcakes before. These grabbed my eye immediately! Working on how to make the fondant flowers myself. The small ones are probably harder than the larger ones, but the combination of the two sizes makes a great display.

The above combination of gold, pink and blue iced cupcakes with delicate florals topping them are incredible! The designs and textures differ from cupcake to cupcake, each one showing off a different skill of the baker. Now, which one to try first? Hmm...

And finally the perfect white floral cupcake with silver dragees in the centers. I love how the baker showed off the cupcake by tying a ribbon around the base of each cupcake and presenting them on their own tiny cupcake plate.

Will cupcakes replace wedding cakes entirely? I still like seeing the traditional wedding cake, but love seeing a smaller wedding cake surrounded by these smaller wedding wonders! What do you think? Big cakes? cupcakes? combination of the two?

Art Deco and Art Nouveau Wedding Cakes

Is your wedding in an old fashioned art deco building? Then this art deco wedding cake is perfect for you! The combination of metallic and pearls and the linear look on the cake will wow your guests.

The link for Brides.com wasn't working when I posted this, so I hope it's back up soon. Just in case they move things around, just run a search on their site for "art deco wedding cake" and you should be able to find it once they finish their 'renovations.'

Martha Stewart also gets into the Art Deco look with angles and arches making the cake!  You can always count on Martha to give you a cake that rocks!

Art Nouveau Wedding Cake

This cake, the prettiest of the group, was inspired by the fashions of the early 20th century. This cake was inspired by the jeweled insect pins popularized at the turn of the 20th century.

This cake is made  from royal icing, gold luster dust, and edible pearls. The enchanted-forest backdrop provides the perfect perch for the two delicate sugary dragonflies.

No cake topper is needed. This cake's dragonflies represent the bride and groom.

Metallics-Modern and In Style

Temari Wedding Cake

Temari? Never heard of it? Neither had I, that's one of the great things about blogging, you learn something new everyday.

What is Temari? Expert Barbara B. Seuss who wrote a fabulous book on Temari describes it as follows: "Temari てまり ("hand ball" in Japanese) is a folk craft born in ancient Japan from the desire to amuse and entertain children with an embroidered toy thread ball. "  (quote from her book, Japanese Temari)The Japanese art of Temari is over a thousand years old. A threaded ball was created by weaving silk in bright colors onto a small ball, the perfect simple toy for a child. (Btw, once the insanity of wedding planning is over if you're at all crafty, check out her books, two on Temari (one that is on pre-order right now), one on Kimekoni.)

These Temari inspired small cakes are pretty, decorative and sure to catch the eye of all your guests. How cool! A round ball decorated with colorful icings and a two layer cake with dots to match the colors the Temari balls were iced in. I love it when a baker and cake designer take it to the next level and create a wedding cake/or cakes that really catch the eye and aren't the same old, same old!

This cake was designed by Maki's Cakes. They offer a variety of different Temari cakes to choose from. Where am I going? I'm headed to my kitchen to see if I can figure out how to make these at home, fun for my next party for sure! And then? I'm going to call my girlfriend and recommend these books to her (I'd read them just for the photos, she'd actually put it to use! A great crafter I am not!

This UK cake designer has a variety of wedding cakes guaranteed to 'knock your wedding shoes off.'   I love it when I find a new cake designer who does something 'a little bit different.' This feathered look is one of my favorites. This sculptural style wedding cake is gorgeous! It looks like it belongs to a bride who prides herself on her ability to be ahead of the trend. She's the bride you want to follow!

Like the look of the two tier broderie anglaise style wedding cake? You can have it on your wedding cake too.  Victoria Made shows the eyelet look on this two tier cake. Victoria Made cakes are decorations in and of themselves.  This cake looks like a flower girls dress or a wedding gown that's edible.

Chocolate Birds?

Looking for a unique cake? Love this green and cream cake complete with it's chocolate love birds! If you're not into a fancy cake with layers and layers of icing and thick buttercream, this pretty but simple cake is a great option for you.
It looks easy to execute for your baker (although I don't recommend baking your own wedding cake unless you have some serious experience!)
Don't forget, you can choose you baker based on their skills. Most of them can execute your designs in custom colors.  So if you aren't doing a green cake, not to worry, just change the base icing color.  Easy!

Eye Popping Wedding Cake

Whether you are looking for cakes or cookies (biscuits for those of you in the UK) this company has it all! Head on over and take a look.  Everyone is sure to find something to suit them.

Supermarket Wedding Cakes

Wedding cakes don't just come from high end bakeries anymore! Cakes these days can be made at home, or like the ones above, come from supermarkets.  (Of course some of these came from high end markets!)
Love the cake with the ribbon flowing down the side from Fortnum & Mason!  The cakes above came from Marks and Spencer, Watirose and Fortnum & Mason. Prices vary.

This trend is not just something happening in the UK, but you'll find wedding cakes in most supermarket bakeries in the United States as well.  A quick visit to my store's bakery showed a simple three tier cake running about $350.
